Consult the Oblique Strategies card deck. Co-created by mastermind Brian Eno, Oblique Strategies is a collection of beguiling, insightful aphorisms to help creative people work through problems (sample items: “try faking it,” “honor thy error as a hidden intention.”) Ideally, get your hands on an actual, physical card deck; If not, you might bend your unplugging practice a little to check the online version.
If you could clone yourself, what would you do while your clone took care of your life?
“The easiest way I unplug is by committing to an activity where I really have no other option. If I go hiking, I know there’s no reception. If I go surfing, or swimming, or biking, I can’t take my iPhone with me. And when I go to a film, or a play, or the ballet, I’m asked to turn off my phone immediately. Not only does it force me to power down, but once I’m there, the last thing I’m thinking about is my phone. I don’t miss it, and it doesn’t miss me. Because it’s just a phone.” (David Sax)
Get thee to
Jubilee. Sure it can be a hassle to park. And yes, it might very well be crowded and hot. But with the flameout of the Sunset Junction, the Silver Lake Jubilee is the best street fair/block party going in LA – it’s the place to see bands, comedians, writers, foodies and East Siders of all sorts (craftie woo-woos, community do-gooders, sweaty Rough Trade guys with bare chests). So go. Take it in. Have a lemonade. Enjoy the city as it enjoys itself.
Three words: yo-yo championship. How can that not be amazing?
The Bay Area Classic Yo Yo Championship is Saturday at the Spreckles Temple of Music (aka The Bandshell) in Golden Gate Park; freestyle finals are from 2-5 pm.
Forgot to schnorr an invite to a friend’s beach house or lake retreat? Don’t despair. Take your own mini-vacation – hop on the ferry for the epic seven-minute journey to Governor’s Island, which opens for the season Saturday (forecast: 80 degrees and sunny). The former military outpost – off-limits to the public for 200 years and only opened to summer visitors six years ago – is a gorgeous green sanctuary, perfect for biking or picnicking or exploring. Saturday activities include a family festival (crafts, storytelling, etc), a show of plein-air paintings, a tournament of old-tyme baseball and a food and beer festival that culminates in a grilled cheese cook-off!
