Choose a personal theme song for the rest of your summer.

If you could clean your personal cache, like a computer, what would you delete and send to the recycle bin?

“The great omission in American life is solitude; not loneliness, for this is an alienation that thrives most in the midst of crowds, but that zone of time and space, free from the outside pressures, which is the incubator of the spirit.” (Marya Mannes)

We’ve driven past the exit on the way to Santa Barbara too many times to count. This time we’re stopping. The Channel Islands National Park encompasses five islands that are accessible by boat year-round: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara. Fun fact: the islands are home to over 2,000 plant and animal species, of which 145 are found nowhere else in the world. Let’s get a little remote.

Angel Island–the largest island in San Francisco Bay–is beckoning. We’re excited to take the ferry, do some hiking, and take in the views from a new vantage point. The Angel Island Conservancy keeps a calendar of events all summer long. Catch America’s Cup Finals, Civil War-era cannon firings or live music every weekend in August. This Saturday’s band: Grandpa Banana.

An island in the East River? Yes. It’s called Randall Island and it boasts an impressive park with a ton of offerings. We’re excited to get out of our corner of Manhattan and check it out. There’s an urban farm, athletic fields, a driving range, and a summer art exhibit. Best part: it’s just a subway ride away. Details here.
